Professor Fukanō, the famous scientist, has embarked on a new challenge – piloting around the world in a plane of his own design. There’s just one problem: there’s not enough fuel to complete the journey. Luckily, there are two other planes to help. Can you help the professor fly for the whole trip and achieve his dream, without anyone running out of fuel and crashing? Judd A. Schorr shows how.

08.07.2022I actually came up with a simpler solution. Planes 1 and 2 take off. Once they're 1/4 of the way plane 2 transfers 1/4 of it's fuel to Plane 1 giving it more than enough to get back. Then Plane 3 takes off in the opposite direction and meets plane 1 1/4 of the way home repeating when Plane 2 did. This gives Planes 1 and 3 enough fuel to get home.

08.07.2022Solution: have the two assistants fly up to the north pole with full tanks, one slightly ahead of the other. As their longitude is not changing, they are not loosing any fuel according to the rules of the puzzle. The instant the one who is slightly ahead crosses over the north pole, her tank of fuel will empty, as they have traveled 180 degrees of longitude, thus the other assistant will transfer all of his tank but one drop to her. Then the leader will travel towards the professor, still using no fuel as her latitude is not changing, meet him at the other side of the earth just as he runs out of fuel and transfer her full tank to him except for two drops, while the other uses his full tank to travel back and refuel. The two assistants meet again at the north pole, where the one who has refueled fills up the other ones tank right before she crosses over the north pole, leaving him with two drops, then transfers one of his drops of fuel to her after she crosses the north pole to prevent him from crashing. Then the two assistants travel back to base and refuel. Once the professor is within 1 degree latitude of the airport, one of them flies up and gives him the extra two drops of fuel he will need to make it all the way there.

08.07.2022How can a plane hold 180 m³ of fuel?
MAPA
08.07.2022I too have one solution. Let us suppose that fugori and professor start the journey from west side and till 45 longitude , then professor will be given 45kl fuel by fugori and fugori will return to the airport. And the professor will cover the journey till 225° longitude and orakana will come from the east side till 47° longitude and then fugori will come to help orakana and will refuel it completely and will go again to the airport. And then orakana will go to the professor with 180kl and orakana will itself use 88+88 kl=176kl and 4kl will be given to professor.and this process will be repeated for 34 times so that professor will acquire fuel to complete the journey and now after completing for professor, orakana is empty and so fugori will now again help to orakana, by coming with 180kl and using 94kl for itself and left over 86kl to orakana, and then professor, and orakana will return to airport and professor has completed his journey. And for next round even fugori and orakana can complete their journeys by interchanging positions…

07.07.2022What's the Gforce the assistants would feel doing an instantaneous 180degree change in direction at 6660 kph?
boredpotato
07.07.2022Instantaneously turning around at that sort of speed is going to put so much G-force on the pilots that they'd also die instantly (it'd be similar to smashing into a concrete wall at full speed), so not sure it's accurate to say the solution results in them surviving the experiment!

Axole Dlomo
07.07.2022If plane 1 and 2 head west. Plane 2 refueling plane 1 with 90 kilolitres, after 90 degrees, that's enough for plane 1 to make it 270 degrees, plane 2 can head back. Plane 3 can meet with plane 1 at 270 degrees, refuel plane 1 with 90 kiloliters. And both will have enough fuel to land safely.

03.07.2022I was so close! I didn't think of using pilot 3 as a support for both pilot 1 and 2 at the start to get that extra boost. I had pilot 2 assist the professor, then go back. Then, pilot 3 does the same thing, but with pilot 2 in the professor's place, sending him to meet the professor on the other side. from there, pilot 2 splits fuel with the professor, and pilot 3, who has refueled, sets off to meet them 60 away from the end goal. However, since everyone is now sixty away from the goal and has to split 120 among 3, they have to make a choice. Furugori and Orokana decide to save themselves and leave the professor behind. They were plotting all along to pass it off as an accident and steal Fukano's creation. What did we learn today? I am terrible at riddles.

03.07.2022When you found a solution, which is even more difficult than this one, but you haven't taken the tanking time in mind: NOO I WAS SO F*CKING CLOSE WHYYYYY MY SOLUTION WAS EVEN MORE DIFFICULT THEN THE ONE THEY USED IN THE VIDEO IT'S UNFAIR
Basically, the first half is the same, only the plane that went up to 1/4, immediately leaves after arriving, together with the other plane, at 1/3 of the second half, one of the planes (3) fuels the other, and turns back, to refuel.
The other plane (2), flies to the 3/4 degrees mark, where they meet the professors plane (1). They split the remaining fuel from 2, and fly towards 3, which will have enough fuel to guarantee a safe landing
If you don't need time for refuel, this should technically work (unless I messed up somewhere, that would mean a plane would crash)
Koharumi
02.07.2022That would be a nerve racking flight.
Stress levels through the roof due to worry about fuel, will they arrive in time etc.

Nathaniel Gibbons
02.07.2022correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is a simpler solution,
fukano & fugori go west,
at the 90 W mark, fugori transfers 90 kL to fukano, fugori returns to base
when fukano reaches the 180 mark, orokana goes east,
at the 90 E mark, fukano & orokana meet, orokana transfers 90kL to fukano and changes direction to base
fukano & orokana land at base
Mo
02.07.2022Actually it's much simpler to make only 1 assistant accompany the professor in the first quarter, after 90 minutes of take off the assistant would give half his fuel to the professor and return back with his 90k of fuel, leaving the professor with a full tank again, and then once the professor reaches 180 minutes and once the first assistant land, the other assistant will take off in the opposite direction, meeting the professor at the final quarter, transferring half of the fuel to the professor and head together to the airport.
